EXPANDING OUR HORIZONS
Remember that “fellowship takes on new meaning when combined with tools to help us all live better.” Join your brothers and sisters at St. Mark’s for the second in the series on “Expanding our Horizons.”

The event is sponsored by the Evangelism Committee and presented by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans’ Financial Consultant Max Holland. We will gather in Fellowship Hall after worship for fellowship and food for the belly before settling down for an experience that will help you live better.  Our topic is “Retirement MattersSM: Preparing for the future you want,” chosen by popular interest by the people of St. Mark’s.

Call Geri Monetti at 540-904-2879 or Cecil Baecher at 540-774-4930 if you have questions.

-St. Mark’s Family, Thank you for acknowledging my completing and passing the VA State Board of Cosmetology!  Though I finished St. Pierre Academy in the fall of 2008 - it was nice to be acknowledged with my peers.  Thank you for your prayers and support.  God truly has blessed my business and continues to shower me with love and support.”  Lindsay Elliott

-Lucy and I want to thank everyone at St. Mark's for the gracious send-off you gave us. Thank you for the wonderful reception at the Coffee Hour on August 1, the beautiful picture of the church (which I will treasure), your generous financial gift, and the many cards and notes we received. We will always remember with fondness our time at St. Mark's. Our prayers and best wishes to you all. -- Pastor John McCandlish

-“Dear St. Mark’s, On behalf of the Summer Enrichment Program, I want to thank your congregation for the donation to our program.  The summer day camp for low income children is over 30 years old and is provided at no charge for 5 to 9 year olds of the area.  Most of our children would never have these opportunities without the support of our churches such as St. Mark’s.”  Sincerely, Ann Seldon, Chair Summer Enrichment Board of Directors

ST MARK'S LIBRARY

WHERE’S THE LIBRARY?

Have you ever seen a room at St. Mark’s filled with books? If you have, then you know that the Bowers Library is located on the Highland Avenue hall. It is the first room on the left when entering from Highland Ave. If you don’t know its location, the library committee invites you to look it up, go in, browse and perhaps check out a book. The check out area is to the right upon entering the library, and the check out procedure is posted there.

BOOK REVIEW
STONEWALL JACKSON’S BLACK SUNDAY SCHOOL -  By Rickey E. Pittman
This biography of Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson is a book for youth, but adults will find it interesting. Mr. Pittman tells about more than the military life of General Jackson. He presents Jackson’s life as a professor at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington and as a leader in his church and community. The author tells about Jackson’s strong faith and his personal goal to help all people to learn to read no matter what their race. It was also his goal that the new readers would study the Bible and the Christian faith. As a whole the illustrations are good, but some of the illustrations depicting Jackson are disappointing including the cover. Read this book, and you’ll find out what church in Roanoke has a stained glass window honoring General Jackson.
